The UNN lecturers have joined the nationwide strike.
The Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Ifeanyichukwu Abada, has said that any lecturer involved in any academic activity during the union's strike would be punished.
Mr. Abada told the News Agency of Nigeria in Nsukka, Enugu State, on Monday that teaching and supervising examinations as well as attending senate, board, faculty or departmental meetings would be treated as anti-ASUU activities.
"The strike is total and any academic staff member found disobeying it will be punished.
"We have set up a monitoring and enforcing team to ensure that the indefinite strike is strictly obeyed by all academic staff members," he said.
He said that UNN-ASUU members joined the national strike on Wednesday after its congress.
"UNN-ASUU has officially informed the university management of the withdrawal of services till the strike is suspended.
"If you move around you will see that academic activities have been grounded," he said.
The chairman solicited the understanding of students and their parents since the objective of the strike was to improve the quality of teaching and learning in universities.
"It is unfortunate that the agreement the Federal Government signed with ASUU since 2009 has not been fully implemented.
"Parents should mount pressure on the government to fulfill its agreement with ASUU," he said.
Only a few students moved about in the campus while many others travelled home because of the strike.
One of the students, Victor Onu, of the Department of Economics, called on the government to do everything possible to meet the demands of the union to enable it to call off the strike.
"If nothing is done, this indefinite strike may last up to six months. The government should do something to stop constant disruption of academic calendar as a result of strike to save education from total collapse.
"I plead with the National Assembly to compel the Federal Government to meet the demands of ASUU," Onu said.
